Of course we want our packaging to bring you joy, but we also want our products to be eco-friendly and safe for the consumer. Cosmetic packaging is one of the biggest hazards for our landfills and oceans, with tons of unrecycled plastic material buried or burnt every year. With that in mind, Thesis designs our packaging to be as eco-friendly as possible.
Reduce, reuse, recycle!
WHY IS GLASS ECO-FRIENDLY?
Many of our glass containers already have 40% recycled content and are handmade-- supporting both the environment and small artisan manufacturers. We love glass for its sustainability and safety: glass is non-toxic and can be reused infinitely! Glass is made from sand, a sustainable & non-toxic resource. Although not biodegradable, it can be infinitely and easily recycled. Glass can deteriorate over time – it blends with sand or can be found as beautiful sea glass. Unlike plastic, when glass ends up in the ocean (please don’t litter!) it sinks and doesn't kill sea animals.
WHY IS OUR PAPER ECO-FRIENDLY?
We use 100% recycled, recyclable and biodegradable paper packaging. All of our labels are printed on treeless paper (cotton or stone). Recyclable paper is non toxic and biodegradable, and means less waste. No trees and forests were harmed for the sake of our packaging.
WHY IS ALUMINUM ECO-FRIENDLY?
Aluminum tin packaging can be easily and infinitely reused and recycled, and is non-toxic-- no damage to the product or the user. Currently we use aluminum container closures wherever possible.
WHY LIMIT THE USE OF PLASTIC?
Plastic packaging has its advantages: it is cheaper, readily available and ships easier. But it carries a host of health hazards and contributes to environmental pollution.
Here are the main reasons we limit our use of plastics:
-Producing plastics uses nearly 9 times the energy of producing glass.
-Recycling is limited due to difficulty in sorting the different types of plastics which may contaminate each other if not separated thoroughly, leading to poor quality recycled containers.
-The raw material is derived from natural gas or oil, both non renewable fossil resources.
-Plastics contaminates their contents with toxins! Common chemicals in plastics include BPA, phthalates, vinyl chloride, dioxin, styrene and more.
-Plastic waste ends up in the combustion chambers (where it contributes to air pollution) or in the landfills (the estimated decomposition time for plastic is a MILLION years).
-Reuse is limited: plastics are temperature sensitive, easily deform and still leach chemicals.
-Plastic waste causes the deaths of thousands of sea creatures every year!
Thesis limits our use of plastic to some container closures and pumps, as well as containers for our large body scrubs (mainly for safety reasons). We use PET containers – the most benign type of plastic-- which are more readily recyclable than other plastics.
We strongly encourage you to recycle all packaging after use or to repurpose it in a creative way.
Thank you for being a discerning beauty purist!
